Global Birdfair raising funds for BirdLife International

Global Birdfair in 2025 will be supporting BirdLife’s conservation work to safeguard the Antipodean Albatross and other endangered seabirds from the threat of bycatch in longline fisheries in the Pacific.

The Global Birdfair 2025 Conservation Project, Safeguarding Ocean Species, will focus on tackling threats facing our magnificent seabirds in the southern Pacific by increasing the use of bycatch mitigation measures on longline fishing vessels. The project will reduce accidental killing of species such as the Antipodean Albatross and create greater awareness of this problem on a global scale.

The bait and dead fish surrounding fishing vessels represent a rich feeding ground, often attracting hundreds of seabirds. Sadly, for many seabirds, including albatross, this meal is often their last. Incidental capture (also known as bycatch) in fishing gear is the most pervasive threat to these birds.

Merlin vs The Two Dans in Osprey Events on Saturday 13 July at Global Birdfair 2024.

Merlin vs the two Dans: Can an app taught by machine learning beat birding experts and the audience in identifying birds and their songs?

If you missed this at the Global BirdFair, if you want to watch it again, hear from Alli Smith of the Cornell Lab, and experts birders Dan Rouse and Dan Brown

Comments from The Two Dans:

Dan Rouse "When asked to do this event against the Merlin, I was nervous knowing how intelligent Merlin was. Nevertheless we pulled together and managed to beat one of the best apps than I unashamedly use every day! It's always such fun to be on stage at Global Birdfair and having audience participation was a huge highlight for me"

Dan Brown "Thank you for the invite to be part of it, it was a fantastic event to be involved with and I felt it was a perfect combination of science, technology and birding fun (in fact this can be my quote!). I thought Ally hosted it very well and it was great to start with the background to Merlin and to end with the ability for people to ask questions"
